Arts for Health project reaches out in Derby
Young and isolated parents and people living with HIV and AIDS are some of the groups throughout Derby who will soon benefit from over £70,000 in Lottery funding over the next three years.
The expansion of the pilot project in Derby will use creative approaches to help improve health and reduce health inequalities of the marginalised groups and communities including African and Caribbean young people and groups of people from some of the most deprived areas of the city.
‘Arts for Health' will focus on building the confidence of the participants to assist them in fulfilling their lives and improving their health and well-being. Activities will include art, photography and creative writing sessions, which will then be shown through an exhibition and performances of their personal stories.
Cal Chikwendu, Health Improvement Principal at NHS Derby City said, "We are delighted to have been awarded this substantial amount from the Big Lottery Fund. We are looking forward to using the money to help different community groups take part in new and exciting art activities to improve health."
Mick McGrath, Big Lottery Fund, East Midlands Head of Region, said, "This project has already established itself as a innovative way of reaching marginalised communities throughout Derby."
