WELCOME
Welcome to the Faith to Engage EM website originally established by East Midland Churches Forum.
The East Midlands Churches' Forum was established in 1998 at the request of Church Leaders in the Region and in response to an initiative of Churches Together in England (CTE). Its primary purpose, to support the Churches' representation to Governmental bodies across the region including local authorities, councils, regional bodies and agencies such as Health, Equalities, Education and Planning, was pursued energetically for the 13 years of Regional Government.
In June 2011 the Forum was wound up following the government's decision to dismantle regional government and the subsequent decline of most regional infrastructure and Our Final Report can be viewed or downloaded from the Annual Reports page on this site.
HOWEVER there is of course, no less to do in the area of public and social engagement by all faith communities and my task over the next few months as the Partner in this region for Faith to Engage is to seek to support and encourage all that is, or could be happening.
In addition to the high commitment flowing from our various faiths, and individual worship centres, we are assured that faith groups continue to be invited by government at every level to play a full part in their communities. The work of Faith to Engage continues in the region and this site and our data bases will be maintained to assist that work. Please do follow the links to see the sort of thing that can be done by local groups and churches and seek our help in anything you are trying to do in your area.
Through the various pages and links on this site we hope you:
- will see the importance and potential of the churches' involvement with Government and Regeneration of Our Region
- will help us form a truly informed and representative Christian view
- will comment on our thinking from the perspective of any interest group engaged with our regions organizations

So what’s the Buzz:
- FareShare, hit the national headlines last weekend when they asked the food industry for extra helpings as UK hunger spreads:
- New figures released by UK food charity FareShare show a sharp rise in demand on charities for food as people all over Britain struggle to put dinner on the table. 42% of charities surveyed reported an increase in demand for food in the past year as food prices soar and the recession bites, putting additional strain on families and people on low incomes.
- An additional 1 in 3 of the charities surveyed are facing government funding cuts, with 65% of these charities slashing food budgets in an effort to stay afloat.
- FareShare is helping to take some of this strain by providing surplus, good quality food from the food industry to a network of grassroots community organisations all over the UK, saving them almost £8 million a year in food and other costs. This food is now reaching 35,000 people a day, up from 29,000 last year - following the largest ever yearly increase in the number of charities desperate for FareShare food, up from 600 to 700.
- Leicester Diocese has led the way in that county and is now offering to assist expansion into neighbouring areas. Read more on our website and contact me if you need any further information – some serious thinking is going on in Lincoln already see more on our web-site and www.FareShare.org.uk
- PowerShare – a thought! While FeedinTarrif (FiT)and Rent a roof schemes are supported by the government has anyone the expertise and energy (sorry!) to work up a repeatable model which would allow charitable trust members to buy PhotoVoltaic panels for the roofs of their asset (meeting hall, community rooms etc), earn a return personally from the generation fee (8.5 - 45p/kwh depending on size) and give the fuel poor a hand with subsidies from the FiT itself at least (3.1p/kWh) as well as providing free power to their own building.…or even hardwire your neighbours.
- The Joseph Rowntree Foundation published ˜The riots: what are the lessons from JRF’s work in communities” by John Low, Programme Manager at JRF see http://www.jrf.org.uk/publications/riots-what-are-the-lessons. Urban Forum also featured related issues in its latest edition of Clearway

EMCF Archive - Prior to June 2011
This page relates to the Forum which was wound up in June 2011 - Please see Welcome Page
Membership of the Forum comprises of Church Leaders in the East Midlands and nominate representatives and specialists. All Christians who are actively involved in church or social leadership or have a particular area of relevant expertise are invited to attend.
A starting point for our work is a paper on Theological Principles further enhanced by one on Subsidiarity.
From this starting point we have sought to engage with a rapidly expanding portfolio of Policy development across the East Midlands.
We aim to co-ordinate the Churches' response to shared issues.
We aim to encourage as many as are able to engage with these political processes which are shaping our society in an increasingly devolved English, United Kingdom and European context and in a rapidly changing world.
We aim to concentrate on those matters which will best serve our society and harness its vision for sustainable development, economic progress, social inclusivity, environmental impact, and planning.
